Verify the number against an official company identity

A Corporate Identity Number helps locate an Indian company in MCA services, but a plausible-looking sequence alone does not prove that the company exists or is currently active. Search the official record and compare the legal name, registrar information and status shown. MCA provides different identifiers for different categories, including limited liability partnerships and foreign companies. Select the correct type rather than forcing every organisation into a CIN-based search.

Account for older names and document references

A company’s paperwork may contain an earlier name or identifier reference, so preserve the original details while checking the current record. MCA guidance describes searches using company names, registrar registration details and historical references where available. If the master information and a supplied certificate disagree, investigate the relevant change filing before drawing conclusions. Tax identifiers and invoice numbers perform other functions and should not be copied into a company-number field merely because they are available.
