Separate an entity identifier from a filing number
Rhode Island’s Corporate Database offers more than a name lookup: searches include individuals, agents, addresses, purposes and NAICS classifications. Its identification number belongs to the entity, while the filing number identifies a particular recorded submission. Use the correct field when following a reference from an annual report or certificate. The official search guidance also explains the required formatting and how broader name searches differ from an exact match.
Do not infer status from the search tab alone
The active and inactive search collections are useful navigation tools, but their membership needs careful interpretation. Rhode Island’s guidance notes that recently revoked registrations can remain within the active collection for a period. Open the entity details, read the status information and check the latest relevant filings. Older records can also be approached through the historic corporate catalogue, particularly when a modern name search does not resolve the business being investigated.
