Follow the Pennsylvania file number
Pennsylvania’s Department of State provides business record searches through its filing services. Search by legal name or the file number used in the current system; older paperwork may instead refer to an entity number. The bureau’s information includes registered businesses and their filed history. A fictitious name needs particular care because its registration describes a business name and does not, by itself, identify a newly incorporated company.
Allow for documents awaiting digitisation
The department explains that some historical documents require scanning from microfilm. An incomplete online document list therefore calls for a records request, rather than an assumption that no earlier filing exists. For formal status evidence, check the certificate of subsistence or other certificate appropriate to the entity and purpose. Use certified copies when the recipient needs an authenticated filing, and distinguish those copies from an ordinary search printout.
