Assess each jurisdiction where the corporation conducts business
Federal incorporation and provincial or territorial registration address different parts of a Canadian company’s legal position. Corporations Canada explains that a federal corporation must examine registration in the jurisdictions where it conducts business. The relevant tests and procedures vary, so map the company’s actual activities and locations before choosing a filing route. A national-looking corporate name does not remove the need to check the rules of an individual province or territory.
Keep local registrations aligned with the original corporation
Some jurisdictions offer coordinated registration processes, but the company should still confirm which applications have been completed. Preserve the federal corporation number alongside local registry identifiers and ensure that names and addresses describe the same entity. Canada’s Business Registries can help locate participating records, though it does not itself register a business or cover every type of entity. Subsequent changes and ongoing obligations must be checked with the authority responsible for each registration.
