Decide whether you are creating an entity or registering a name
Registering an Australian company creates a corporate structure, while registering a business name records the name under which its holder trades. The holder might be a company, an individual or another eligible structure. ASIC explains when a business name must be registered and the relevant exceptions. Establish the intended holder and check name availability before applying; a favourable name result does not itself complete either company registration or business name registration.
Keep the name registration connected to its holder
The Australian Government’s Business Registration Service brings several applications together, but each registration retains its own purpose. Ensure that the business name is linked to the correct ABN and legal holder, then retain the resulting records. Business names require renewal for the selected term, so keep contact details current and review official notices. A name registration should not be treated as proof that the holder has every licence required for its chosen activities.
